Textbook
M. L. Bittinger & D. J. Ellenbogen, Prealgebra, 2nd. ed., Addision-Wesley Pub. Co., Reading (1996), ISBN 0-201-55753-3.
We'll attempt to cover at least the following chapters and sections:
Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 Sections 8.1--8.3, 9.2, 9.5.
Videos that accompany each section are available for checkout in the Media Center (back of the Library).

You'll need the use of a scientific calculator with a fraction key:
. The Texas Instruments TI-34 is recommended.
Adding the course
Any work that you may have missed by the time you add the class will be considered missed, and you shall not be provided an opportunity to make up the work for credit.
Grading
Quizzes (total)--30%; Test 1--5%; Test 2--7%; Test 3--10%; Test 4--13%; Final--35%
F: 0--54; D: 55--69; C: 70--79; B: 80--89; A: 90--100 (%)
Homework
Homework will be assigned but not collected. You are reminded, however, that doing homework regularly goes a long way to your passing or doing well in the course.
Quizzes
You need to purchase Scantron sheets (Form No. 882-ES) for the weekly quizzes. Quizzes will be unannounced, so bring your Scantron sheets to every class meeting.
Tests
There'll be four tests in all. Each of the four tests will be announced roughly one week before it is given. Tests will check your understanding of the material and not simply whether you can do homework-type problems; also, all tests are cumulative.
Note that there will be no early or make-up tests. Your lowest test score (zero in the case that you miss a test) will be assigned a score that equals the average of your other three test scores. For example, if you score 85, 82, 70, and 80, the "70" test score will be replaced with a score that is the average of 80, 82, and 85; in the event that two or more tests share the same low score, only one score will be replaced with the other(s) remaining unchanged.
Final Exam
The Final Exam will be comprehensive on December 13, 1996, 3--4:50 P.M., Room 724.
