The Engineering Wonders of Hot
Glue
A Page Describing the Statistics of the Hot Glue
Mobile
John Ruzic and Bikramjit (Bik) Singh model the Hot Glue Mobile
One of the wonders of modern Engineering (it's a wonder it moved)

Mobile (Ruzic - Sing)
The Hot Glue Statistics
The Hot Glue Mobile was a Mouse Trap Vehicle designed to run in the 2002
mouse trap contest (see the Mousetrap Web Page
for a description of the contest and it's rules)
The Designers of this vehicle were Bik Singh and John Ruzic, the Builders
included the above and Jack Ruzic. Phil Murillo was the Parts
Lender.
During the race there were 6 heats. Our best time was a miraculous 3.15
seconds over a 2.5 meter course (miraculous because it was the ONLY race
in which the car crossed the finish line)
We placed (you guessed it) Dead Last in the competion.
Cost Breakdown
The Hot Glue Mobile more than fit within the cost budget of $20.00
Items of Cost worth mentioning are:
- Rear Axel Bearings ($5.99)
- Front Axel Bearings (7.99)
- Mousetrap ($0.49)
- Wooden Rear Axel ($0.03)
- Front Tires ($2.50)
- Metal Supports/Front Axel ($0.50)
Please note that the Balsa Wood used in the Rear Wheels
was scrap wood
and thus was of no cost to the team.
Total Cost was $17.50
Proposed Improvements
Though there are far to many possible improvements to list on a single web
page without requiring a T1 line to download the page, we did decide to
list a few of them here.
Some possible improvements are:
- Better Traction for Rear Tires (rubber bands or balloons)
- Don't Gum Up the Bearings
- A better method of securing the string to the axel
Possible Rule Improvements for 2003
Contest
It is in our humble oppinion that the contest rules for this year were
"excelent"
Basically, there is no improving on them when it comes to the contest that
we ran.
However, we believe that the whole "drag race" thing has now been
overdone. In order to "spice up the contest" you should do a complete
revison of the entire contest. We heard many good suggestions in class.
Among the best were:
- Create a mousetrap vehicle that is the SLOWEST to complete a 2.5m
course
- Create a mousetrap vehicle that completes a 1m course fast, then
stops within the next meter
- Create a mousetrap powered boat to race a .5m water course
- Create a mousetrap "Monster Truck" to drive over an obstacle
- Create a mousetrap vehicle that can pull X kg over a set distance
(tractor pull)
Basically, what we're getting at is that speed has been done to death.
Change around the contest with a complete overhaul to make it more
interesting for next years students.
Thank you for reading our report. We will now end
with a side view of the Hot Glue Mobile
